The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) finds itself in a challenging position over its firm stance on hosting all Champions Trophy matches within Pakistan. This comes after the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) officially informed the International Cricket Council (ICC) that it would not send the Indian team to Pakistan, citing security concerns. In response, the PCB has reportedly threatened to withdraw from the event as a mark of protest against India's position.
Although discussions about next year’s Champions Trophy are still at an early stage, reports suggest that the ICC is already exploring alternative venues, with South Africa emerging as a possible host. Sources indicate that if the PCB does not agree to a hybrid model, the ICC may opt to shift the entire tournament to South Africa to avoid further complications.
"Unless the PCB withdraws its claim to host the Champions Trophy entirely, the current plan is to conduct India’s matches in the UAE and the final in Dubai," a source told PTI. However, the BCCI has expressed that they would only accept a hybrid model if the final is held in Dubai rather than Pakistan.
In a bid to reach a compromise, the ICC has reportedly offered the PCB full hosting fees along with a majority of the matches if it agrees to the hybrid model. According to a report in Sports Tak, the ICC has informed the PCB that the entire event could be moved to South Africa if they refuse the proposed model.
Despite this potential shift, the PCB remains steadfast in rejecting the hybrid model. Insiders report that PCB leadership is consulting with the Pakistani government to determine the next steps and address the BCCI’s demands. This consultation aims to clarify the PCB's legal and strategic position and gauge the potential impact of either accepting or rejecting the ICC’s offer.
A source close to the PCB said, “As of now, the board is seeking advice from its legal department to draft an email to the ICC requesting clarification on India’s decision. The entire situation is being closely monitored, and no final decision has been taken on the next steps.”
While the ICC awaits a response from the PCB, a decision on the Champions Trophy’s fate may hinge on diplomatic discussions between the cricket boards and their respective governments. The ICC's ultimate goal is to ensure a smooth and competitive tournament, even if that means relocating the event.
